Angela and Robert’s Wedding at Notley Abbey

A Glamorous White Wedding at Notley Abbey

Back in 2012 Robert and Angela’s mutual friend thought they would be a great match and tried to set them up on a blind date – but nothing materialised.

A few months later, Angela was out after work celebrating a promotion with her boss (who happens to be their mutual friend). By chance, Robert also decided to hit the town that night and their paths crossed in Café 1001, where another mutual friend was the DJ for the night. They were instantly drawn to each other and spent the rest of the evening chatting, teasing each other with North vs South banter and forgetting the rest of the world existed. The couple bonded over a shared love of good food and wine, bad jokes and desire to win at everything! Their first official date came a week or so later and the rest, as they say, is history.

After a wonderful 2.5 years of dating, the couple planned on spending Christmas in New York – little did Angela know that she’d be getting the best Christmas gift ever! Robert had previously spent a day in London’s Hatton Garden choosing a diamond and ring design to have created bespoke for the love of his life. And, during a horse and carriage ride around Central Park, Robert popped the question. Angela cried happy tears (for hours) and Robert was able to shake off his proposal nerves before the couple celebrated their engagement with a delicious meal and several glasses of Champagne.

Finding a Romantic Party House Wedding Venue

Angela started searching for her dream wedding venue online and stumbled across Notley Abbey which she thought looked perfect. Robert had in fact attended the wedding of a friend at Notley Abbey many years before and remembers enjoying it. The couple were on the hunt for a perfect, romantic party house wedding venue and on their drive down the stunning tree-lined approach to Notley Abbey, the couple realised that they’d found ‘the one’. The couple booked a Thursday wedding date which enabled them to celebrate their marriage across the whole weekend.

Choosing a Dream Dress

Angela tried on around 15 different wedding dresses before finding the perfect gown for her glamorous Notley Abbey wedding. The bride-to-be fell in love after looking in the mirror at herself in a sensational A-line design by Stella York. The lace bodice was embellished with diamante and the back was designed with a corset closure. The skirt featured a wonderful chapel train and the sweetheart neckline suited Angela perfectly.

It was the ultimate dress for her stylish, white wedding. During the day, Angela wore a comfortable pair of Badgley Mischka wedding shoes, but changed in to a pair of glittery silver strappy sandals by Jimmy Choo for the evening reception.

Angela wanted height when it came to her wedding day hairstyle, so opted for a half up-half down style with volume, topped with a vintage ivory pearl and crystal tiara and a fingertip length veil. Her wedding day makeup was done perfectly by freelance celebrity makeup artist Michelle Abels, who also happens to be the makeup artist supervisor for the TV program, This Morning.

The Big Day: Thursday 16th June, 2016

Due to the size of their wedding guest list, Angela and Robert had their wedding ceremony in the historic Monks’ Refectory at Notley Abbey. 140 guests arrived at the venue during the early afternoon and at 2pm the romantic wedding ceremony began.

Angela’s best male friend, Ash, walked her down the aisle to the sounds of Canon in D played by Vaults String Quartet and the couple had written their own wedding vows to one another; this was a very special, very emotional moment of the day. Two friends, Alicia and Lucy also gave readings during the ceremony and Vaults String Quartet played Queen’s ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’ as the newlywed couple walked back down the aisle, to initiate the start of the party!

Angela and Robert were showered with confetti as they walked down the Cloisters Garden path back in to the house and out to the front of Notley Abbey where they were able to celebrate with friends and family. After enjoying the incredible country grounds with their photographer, the bride and groom ventured back in to The Monks’ Refectory where they were welcomed in as the new Mr & Mrs White. The theme of their wedding day décor was glam, and everywhere had been decorated with incredible white floral arrangements, designed by Joanna Carter.

Wedding reception tables featured tall, glass, flute style vases filled with a combination of avalanche roses, white hydrangea and gypsophila. Strings of pearls hung from the vases and each table was named after a memorable location that told the story of the couple’s relationship; from Central Park where Robert proposed, to Café 1001 where the couple met. Wedding favours consisted of small white boxes filled with a personal message from the couple, sweets and a wine cork.

Ahead of their wedding, the couple hired the traditional white wedding post box from Harper Weddings and, to add a touch of fun to their reception, they booked a Marryoke Booth which turned out to be great fun.

The couple were over the moon with the wedding band they hired at Notley Abbey, The Brotherhood – a rare find. 2 years before their engagement, Robert had been on a golfing weekend with the boys and happened to be in a bar where The Brotherhood were performing. Robert loved their music and sound so much that he called Angela on the phone with the band playing in the background and said ‘Listen to how great these guys are – when we get married I want them to perform on our wedding day!’. The couple hadn’t discussed getting married before so it was a really touching moment for Angela.

The couple commissioned Designer Cakes by Elle to create their super elegant four-tier ruffle wedding cake, complete with a personalised wedding topper.

Amongst the chaos of planning their wedding, Angela and Robert also decided to book dancing lessons, so that they could perform the perfect first dance. The band played ‘Only You’ by Yazoo and guests were wowed as the newlywed couple danced their hearts out.

The couple celebrated their marriage by spending a fantastic two weeks in Bali, travelling to both Ubud and Seminyak.

Advice to Future Couples

“Try and spend a little time alone together on your wedding day. We were given this advice in the run up to getting married and it was so valuable. We set time aside throughout the day, where we spent a few special moments alone as newlyweds, to soak in how much of an amazing time we were having with all of our favourite people and how lucky we were!”
