Neale James Photography

I'm a former broadcaster having spent time behind the microphone at Radio 1. I’ve also produced and presented documentaries, which is key really to the way I now photograph; favouring a documentary reportage style where the story is key.

How would you describe your wedding photography style and what makes you unique?

I certainly champion an unobtrusive story telling approach. That in itself isn’t necessarily unique, but the fact that I can also record audio from a day and present it as a film of stills and sounds as a short Photofilm documentary certainly introduces a unique nature to my work.

How would you describe your working style?

Calm, measured, thoughtful. They’re not necessarily words you associate traditionally with the role of a wedding photographer. I’m there to observe so having this approach works well for me.

Do you shoot digitally or with film? Or both?

I shoot digitally.

What type of equipment do you use?

I shoot Canon mainly for my wedding work, but I really enjoy using the professional Fuji rangefinder styled digital cameras too. The Fujis are so light and discreet that even after a twelve hour day on your feet, you don’t feel weighed down by them. They’re also a far less intimidating to guests.

Do you shoot in colour and black and white?

I shoot colour with an opportunity to work the pictures into black and white when the emotion suits.

What can you offer couples? Can they customise the package with you?

Yes they can customise. I do offer collections to include coverage and albums, though a wedding is always an individual occasion, so equally I’m happy to build a bespoke style of photography.

Do you include an engagement shoot?

Because I’m a wedding photojournalist at heart, a pre-wedding or engagement shoot is not necessarily applicable in terms of style. It’s a very contrived kind of shoot and doesn’t really relate to the big day itself and all the wonderful emotions you’ll be feeling.

How long after the wedding will the couple receive their proofs?

It’s three to four weeks max.

How far in advance should couples book you?

I accept bookings up to two years in advance, though it’s a joy when someone enquires with just a few months to go.

What information do you need from the couple before the wedding day?

Logistics details really; timings and facts about guests if there is a story that needs particular attention. It’s good to meet up in person and Skype is always a great tool for regular chats too.

What are you favourite trends?

In terms of photography, I don’t really follow trends. That’s why I avoid Instagram style colour washes which may be popular now, but not in twenty or thirty years time when you look back at your big day through the pages of an album?

If you were getting married, how would you choose your wedding photographer?

I’d want them to be authentic. I’d want them to tell the true story of my day rather than orchestrate a day long photoshoot. The true magic of wedding pictures is to able to relive reality.
